July 29 - Aug 1, 2018:
What we DID know was that all 3 horses were buried somewhere in this grassy area.
What we DIDN'T know is the exact location of each grave.
For three days in the heat and humidity of southern Maine, George perched on his knees to operate his backhoe as we dug hole after hole looking for any sign of disturbed dirt.
On the 4th morning, with spirits getting low, we tried one more area and the backhoe turned up a hoof of one of Polly's eventers, Silver Morningwood aka "Mikey"!
After finding Mikey's hoof, I uncovered a few more bones while George opened up the hole to make digging by hand easier.
A downside of looking for bones with machinery is the chance of hitting one and causing damage. The backhoe did put a hole in Mikey's hoof wall but I consider this minor collateral damage seeing as we were about to give up the project altogether.
